SINGAPORE -- U. S. regulators have blocked Pfizer Inc., a British drugmaker, from launching a television advertising campaign that promises "great sexual performance" and offers "the ultimate cure for erectile dysfunction."
The Food and Drug Administration and other regulators have blocked Pfizer's television ads for Viagra, saying the drug's promotion could increase sales of the drug.
The ad campaign features the message, "Viagra for Erectile Dysfunction" and offers a "cure" for erectile dysfunction, according to the ad agency.
"Viagra is now a top selling prescription drug in America and it's now the best way to help men have erections for the first time," the ad agency said in a release.
Viagra has been available in the United States since 1998, but it was withdrawn in 2004 because of side effects, the agency said.
Pfizer, which sells the drug in the U. through a variety of online pharmacies, said its ads for the drug have been misleading.
"Viagra is now a top selling prescription drug in America and it's now the best way to help men have erections for the first time," Pfizer said in a statement.
Pfizer, the makers of the drug, said it is taking action to stop selling the drug to consumers and has been asked to stop marketing it.
Pfizer spokeswoman Sharon Rennie said: "We understand that the ads for Viagra are misleading. The ads contain information that is misleading. That's why we have removed these ads from our site. We don't want to put an image of Viagra on our site."
Viagra has been available in the United States since 1998, but it was withdrawn in 2004 because of side effects. Pfizer said it has taken steps to stop selling the drug.
"We do not intend to promote the drug to consumers and to cause any harm to anyone affected," Pfizer said in a statement.
The agency said the ads could be viewed on TV in the U.
Pfizer said it is committed to the health and well-being of its customers.
"We want to improve the experience of our customers so they have a choice," said Scott Rosenberg, an analyst at Preetz Global Securities. "We believe that Viagra is a great drug and it has saved American lives. Viagra saved lives."
The FDA said it has not received any reports of injuries or deaths related to Viagra ads.
The ad campaign, which includes an image of a woman in a blue blouse, is not being used in connection with the Viagra drug's sales. Pfizer said the campaign will focus on sexual health and not on the drug.
